Welcome to Hughes 38 Owners Group. I hope you enjoy this site as much as i have enjoyed creating it.
-
Thanks for creating the site. I have a Hughes 38 and have been trying to locate other owners to see what other owners have done to their 38’s. Keep it up.
-
I am working on the site everyday. The more i do, the more i think of doing! I am not satisfied with the quality of the images and photos. They are clear enough in their original format, but when posted on the site, they get fuzzier, some more than others. It will get fixed eventually. If you have photos that you want to post, or original material – owners manuals for example, let me know. Performance reports – both positive and negative are welcome.

Well done Jon on the website,
I will forward some more photos of my engine upgrade to Thula Mama and provide any other information you think is relevant. Scott-
Great to have you check-in Scott. i am about finished with the first stage of this website, as my material that i have collected so far is almost all posted somewhere on the site. i keep scouring the web for more known material, and i have several really good leads for original material from the factory. Thanks for your help.

Jon,
Any idea where to find the hull number? I think I have searched anywhere and everywhere I thought it could be with no luck.
Any help would be grateful.
Thanks,
Eddie-
The best information that i have is here:
http://www.hughes38.com/?page_id=740
however i believe that your boat was built during the US Steel years, either before of during the time they called themselves Northstar, so things might be different in that era. If you find where it is on your boat, please let us know.
thanks and great to hear from you!

I had already checked that information from the site. It has been a long time since I have pulled everything out and this might be a good time to have a complete inventory of everything on board. That way I can have a thorough check from top to bottom. I will be back in the US in July and will let you know what I find.
Thanks,
Eddie-
Have a great trip. Let us know what you find.

Hi Jon
I received your note with respect to your being the webmaster of the Hughes 38 site and thank you for contacting me. We are presently getting ready for our fourth race of Race the Cape, we are the only Hughes 38 competing and in the first three races consisting of 5 legs per race, total 15, we picked up 1 first place ; 2 seconds and 7 third places in our class. We are quote proud of our Avatar, we usually sail with Father (Me) two Sons and Grandson, three generations. Check out Race the Cape Site on the net, we would like to see more H38s in this race.
Long may your big Jib draw!
Best regards
Walter Pelley-
Its good to hear from you Mr. Pelley. You have a beautiful boat, it is one of my favorite Hughes 38s. I hope to meet you and race Hughes 38s in the Race the Cape some time in the future.

Hi Jon
Thanks for the prompt reply!
My wife and I are just going to the Yacht Club, we have a Steak and Lobster Dinner this evening to kick off our BBQ season.
Several boats have been launched the past few days, some of which are going to Green Land and Iceland ETC.
We will also be starting our local races next Wednesday and we are looking forward to it.
Hopefully you will be relocated to Halifax early in 2017 to enable you to participate in Race the Cape 2017, I will be able to assist you where possible.

Thanks, Walter for the warm welcome. Have a great dinner, and a successful 2016 season on the water.

I just stumbled onto your site and wow, was I surprised our Hughes 38 Farfalla (hull #47) was the first photo on your home page. We just finished our first summer of ownership. Since the photo was taken we have replaced all the standing rigging, have new sails, furler and numerous other fixes and upgrades. My first mate spent a great deal of time restoring the teak decks. Farfalla is now on the hard for winter and we look forward to more sailing, less work next summer.
-
Your boat is really beautiful! That is why it is on the homepage, i just wish i had a better picture of it showing the teak decks. Welcome, and let anybody that is interested in Hughes 38s know about this website. The more we have people involved the better it will be for everybody!

i would like to join the hughes forum. i have a 1979 hughes 38
just found your site. extreamly interesting and informative.

Welcome to the forum, John, such as it is. After no real comments for two months (but huge quantities of spam), i spend a week in Florida, getting sun and looking at boats, and there are two very welcome comments awaiting me! Next year or the year after, my wife and i plan on spending the winter on our own Hughes 38 down in Florida. i’m glad you found this site useful. If you have pictures of your boat send them to me, and i’ll post them. i especially need details of the construction and posts on repair including pics!

Hello,
Great site. I just acquired NorWester, a ’68 project. Lots of work to do but it looks solid enough to bring back. Has the A4 and L shape galley with the fold out table. Lots of good sails and an old furler. Needs lots of work on the delaminating coach top and down below. Hull, keel and rudder looks very good. She should keep be busy. I sail out of the North Channel Yacht Club. The last home Ports were Sarnia then Owen Sound area.
-
Welcome Gary. Congratulations on NorWester, i’m sure that you will have a lot of fun with her! i certainly like the L shaped galley. May things go well for you on the repair of the coach roof. Are you planning on working from the top or the bottom? Is this the one that was advertised on Kijiji for $1? If so, i’m glad you got her, rather than a scrapper. Send pics of your work in progress, as i would like to have more resources for people repairing their boats in the future.

Hi Guys,
Yes that’s the one. The boat was $1! I did buy all the other equipment and cradle separately though. No boat ever is free, sometimes it’s the most expensive one. As a project I will become familiar with all her parts at least.
I won’t know how I will proceed with the coach roof until I can assess the damage better in the spring. My objective is to start by gettting her seaworthy for the trip home to the North Channel where I can begin the work. The cosmetics will come later. The chain plates and hull look excellent so I hope to get the rig up asap.
This brings up a question I have. Anyone know what brand the spars are? PO says the wire halyards need replacing. Will rope work on the sheaves? Thanks any and all advice, much appreciated.
Is this a good place to seek advice from other owners or is there another forum. I joined at yahoo but it doesn’t appear very active.
Cheers, Gary
-
i was also tempted to buy that boat as well, but being a long way from where i live, i’m glad that you got her. i don’t know the maker of the spars. i’ll email some folks and see if i can find any more information. i have no idea if rope will work. i also have found that the yahoo! site is inactive. Several of the owners there no longer have their H38s. Perhaps my post there is the last one? Can i add your email to the list of active H38 owners and admirers?
Blessings

Yes that would be fine. Any information will be very much appreciated. Here is a photo

Hello H-38 Group,
I purchased Witch of Atlas 2 years ago and going through refit/restoration. Hope to have her in the water this spring. I changed out the large ports and replaced them with (6) bronze ports. The original A4 was trash, replaced with another A4, water cooled. Most of interior teak veneer was dry rot, replaced with 1/4″ fir and painted white. Several new seacocks, new hoses, electric, etc. are being installed. Currently reconstructing/ designing galley area.
-
Ahoy Bob, welcome to the fleet. i have heard of SV Witch of Atlas – she was listed as being a race winner of the “Root Trophy”, and it is mentioned here:
http://www.hughes38.com/?page_id=107
on page three of the “purple” sales brochure from the US Steel years. i’m excited about your refit, i’m sure that you are doing a fine job. Send some pics and i’ll post them.

Hi Guys,
I came across a PDF Atomic 4 manual here

Thanks Gary, i’ll add it to the Engine Resources page.
Looks like SV Farfalla is up for sale. Currently listed on Kijiiji.

Yes, she is for sale. Beautiful boat. i’m going to look at one near Windsor in early April.

Hi Guys, here is a link that shows my new project Hughes 38.
Hi all,
Very nice website with a lot of information. I have bought SV Sturm Vogel last year with the intention to restore it to its glory. Although it is a nice boat and nice project I am debating if I should take over. It has an atomic 4 that has not been turned on for the last 5 years and has no sails.
We are expecting our second baby and already have an Ontario 32 that we have been sailing for a season and we really love it.
What are your thoughts on Ontario 32 (diesel) vs a Hughes 38? Also is Atomic 4 a no no these days as many people think so?
-
Congratulations on your purchase of SV Sturm Vogel, and thanks for the compliment on the website. It has been a lot of fun making this website, and i’m glad to share my research into the Hughes 38 as well as nautical topics of personal interest with y’all. i don’t know much about an Ontario 32 other than what i can gleen here: http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?CLASS_ID=1368 . i was watching the auction last fall in Toronto and was hoping that someone would purchase Sturm Vogel and restore her to her former glory. It would have pained me to see her cut up and sold for scrap.

Let me know if you do decide to let go of Sturm Vogel. I know someone who’s interested.
We met last year and I’m the owner of the other Hughes 38 just a stone’s throw from Sturm Vogel.
Cheers!

I am selling a 1980 Hughes 38′ Sparkmen Stephens Design which I have owned 1989 for $25000.
-
Ahoy! Good to hear from you. Send us some pictures please! Where is she located? Is the price in US$? or Can$?

Hi All,
I have decided to let Sturm Vogel go. We have our second baby coming in about a month and I wont have much time to restore it. As unfortunate as it is I will be following this website since it offers such a great help to many resources and support.
I already got a new diesel engine to replace the atomic 4 and got a used but like new main sail. Also got a storm jib but still looking for a full roller furling jib.
Let me know if someone is interested. I am very open to offers.

I need to to thank you for this wonderful read!! I definitely loved every bit of it. I have you saved as a favorite to look at new stuff you post…
I just found your site and I’m hooked. We’ve owned S/V Kiskadee, a 1980 Hughes 38 Mk3, for 12 years. We sailed her in Halifax for 3 years and in Victoria BC for the past 9.
So far, this year’s projects have been installing an Anchorlift 1200 windlass and cutting two twin-size memory foam mattresses down into a V-berth. Both projects turned out better than expected. We’re soon sailing up to Desolation Sound for a few weeks.
Cheers, Dana & Dee

Ahoy Dana: i have read your blog about your time in Nova Scotia and the move to B.C. i think that there is a link somewhere on this site to your blog. If not, i need to add it. Welcome!
jonps, i found the link at the bottom of the page under “Whos Who” – i knew it was somewhere here
Brian Nelson here. I still sail a 38 Hughes and it is in wonderful condition. Hoping there are others out there.
